US President Donald Trump has officially designated May 2026 as "National Physical Fitness and Sports Month," calling on citizens across the country to adopt more active lifestyles.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the proclamation was published on the official White House website.

In his message, the President encouraged government officials, educators, athletes, and the American public—particularly the youth—to participate in regular physical activity. "I declare May 2026 as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. I call upon all Americans to join in sports and physical activities. This will contribute to strengthening the nation's vitality," US President Donald Trump stated.

The initiative highlights a growing public health concern. According to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 40.3% of the population currently suffers from various degrees of obesity, a sharp rise from 22.9% recorded in the early 1990s. Additionally, obesity rates among children and adolescents have reached a record high of 21.1%.

Such presidential proclamations are traditionally used in the United States to mobilize community resources and raise awareness about critical health issues. By focusing on physical fitness, the administration seeks to address long-term healthcare challenges and improve the overall well-being of the population through preventive measures and active engagement. This move aligns with broader national efforts to reduce the economic and social burden of chronic diseases linked to sedentary lifestyles.
