The US Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into who leaked a draft of the 2022 Supreme Court ruling that ended the nationwide constitutional right to abortion, Anadolu Agency reported Thursday, citing Fox News.
Fox News, citing multiple sources briefed on the matter, reported that the office of US Attorney Jeanine Pirro in Washington is leading the investigation.
The draft opinion, which overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, was published by “Politico” in May 2022, before the Supreme Court issued its official ruling the following month. The disclosure of the confidential court document drew national attention.
Chief Justice John Roberts ordered an internal investigation after the leak. The inquiry, conducted by the court, ended without identifying who was responsible.
The new investigation comes years after the leak. The Justice Department’s involvement means the matter is being treated as a possible crime.
The Justice Department declined to comment on the investigation, according to the report.
