The US State Department has said the threat to US-linked facilities in Britain has increased.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media outlets, that the warning came after five people were detained near RAF Fairford, an airbase used by the US Air Force.
The State Department said US-linked facilities, events and organizations could face increased risks. It urged US citizens in Britain to exercise caution and follow local authorities’ recommendations for their personal safety.
On Sept. 27, British police detained five men near RAF Fairford on suspicion of violating laws related to explosives and preparing a terrorist act.
Police launched the operation after receiving information about three suspicious vehicles traveling toward the area.
Security measures were tightened in the area. Some residents were evacuated, while explosive ordnance disposal specialists examined the vehicles.
US President Donald Trump said the detainees had intended to cause significant harm and that US and British authorities were cooperating in the investigation.
Britain’s counterterrorism police are continuing to investigate the incident. The detainees’ specific motive and any links to a foreign power have not yet been officially established.
RAF Fairford is a Royal Air Force base in Gloucestershire that has been used by the US Air Force for strategic aviation operations. Security alerts around military facilities can affect nearby communities and prompt temporary restrictions while police assess potential threats.
