US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has commented on an incident near Britain’s Fairford air base.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media outlets.
He said a foreign power was clearly involved in the incident.
Rubio said he would not disclose further details and thanked the British authorities for their readiness to cooperate.
“This is clearly a situation in which a foreign power is involved. I will not provide further details at this time. I want to thank the British authorities for their great willingness to cooperate and for keeping the situation under control,” Rubio said.
The US secretary of state also recalled that Iran had previously issued explicit threats related to attacks against US interests around the world.
“We will always take this extremely seriously. If this ever happens, or if such an attempt is made, there will be consequences,” Rubio said.
On Sept. 27, reports emerged that suspicious vehicles had been seen near Britain’s Fairford air base, which is used by the US Air Force. Dozens of families were evacuated from one of the nearby settlements. Five people were detained in connection with the incident on suspicion of preparing a terrorist attack and committing offenses involving explosive substances. However, the detainees were later released on bail.
British media also reported possible links between the incident and Iran. Iran’s embassy in London denied any connection to the incident. The embassy described the linking of the five suspects to Iran as “baseless and harmful speculation” and categorically rejected the claims. Its statement said that spreading such allegations could contribute to the rise of Iranophobia in the United Kingdom.
