US health authorities on Sept. 11 declared the largest multistate cyclospora outbreak in the country’s history over. The outbreak was linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce and sickened thousands of people.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 12,883 people fell ill in 21 states, 570 were hospitalized and two died. The figure accounts for more than half of the 19,595 laboratory-confirmed cyclospora cases recorded across the country since May 1.
Federal investigators linked the outbreak to iceberg lettuce supplied from central Mexico. The US Food and Drug Administration continues to investigate how the parasite entered the food supply.
Cyclospora is a parasite that can cause prolonged watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea and fatigue. It is commonly transmitted through food or water contaminated with infected fecal matter, and outbreaks are often investigated through supply-chain tracing.
