Unknown people burned an Ebola treatment center in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday, an official said, as efforts continued to contain an outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus, Anadolu Agency reported.

The incident took place early in the morning in Bafwasende, a rural town in the north-central Tsopo province, according to Marcel Likilo, a doctor in charge of the health zone.

It came one week after a mob lynched a health worker who was responding to an Ebola alert in the area.

Two rooms set aside for suspected cases were burned before local guards intervened and extinguished the fire, Likilo told reporters in the provincial capital, Kisangani.

Doctors deployed to support the Ebola response in the health zone fled to Kisangani. Suspected cases at the center were transferred to Nia-Nia, in neighboring Ituri province, he said.

Health officials said community resistance remained a challenge to efforts to contain the virus.

The latest figures from the Health Ministry showed that confirmed Ebola cases had exceeded 10,000, including more than 5,000 deaths since mid-May.
