A fatal incident occurred during mine-clearance work carried out as part of a humanitarian operation in the settlement of Oleshky.

“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that Russian Commissioner for Human Rights Yana Lantratova announced the incident.

Lantratova said on the Vesti television channel that an explosion occurred while roads were being cleared: “A sapper and another civilian were killed during mine-clearance work. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims.”

The ombudsman said additional safety measures had been introduced in the area after the incident and that delivering aid to people in need remained an important mission.

Oleshky, on the left bank of the Dnipro River opposite the city of Kherson, is facing severe humanitarian conditions. Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier said that Ukrainian forces had mined roads leading to the city, causing a humanitarian disaster, and announced that an emergency relief operation would be carried out in the region.
