Women’s volleyball team Turan beat Croatia’s Mladost 3-2 in the return leg of the second qualifying round of the CEV Champions League. Turan head coach Ziya Rajabov said the match had not gone as the team expected.
Rajabov said travel fatigue, the three-hour time difference between the countries and limited preparation time had affected the team. He said Mladost’s players were better coordinated because they had played together for a long time, while Turan’s lineup had changed almost entirely. The coach highlighted his players’ experience and the character they showed on the court.
Rajabov said the opposing team had tried to provoke his players. He alleged that Mladost head coach, Italian Riccardo Boieri, had refused to accept defeat and behaved in a manner unbecoming of a sportsman. The coach thanked his players for their efforts and noted that Azerbaijan’s Embassy in Croatia had also supported the team.
Turan will face Bulgaria’s Maritsa in the third qualifying round. Rajabov said Maritsa were a young team and that Turan would analyze its opponent.
