A federal judge has ordered US President Donald Trump to sit for a deposition in his $10bn (£7.4bn) lawsuit against the BBC by 11 December, according to the BBC.

Trump is suing the broadcaster over an episode of “Panorama” that combined two separate sections of a speech he delivered before the riot at the US Capitol in 2021.

Charles Tobin, a lawyer representing the BBC, told the court that the broadcaster had still been unable to depose Trump, with two months remaining in the discovery period.

Trump cancelled a deposition scheduled for 16 October, citing “matters of national importance” while campaigning in Georgia.

US Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett ruled that Trump must sit for the deposition by 11 December unless the discovery period is extended. Last week, BBC lawyers asked Lett to compel Trump to give a deposition after the previously scheduled session did not take place.

On 16 October, Trump attended a midterm campaign rally in Dalton, Georgia, and a fundraiser at his property in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.

The lawsuit, filed in Florida, accuses the BBC of “intentionally, maliciously, and deceptively doctoring” a speech Trump gave outside the Capitol on 6 January 2021.
