US President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen have signed an agreement allowing the expansion of the US military presence in Greenland.
The document, signed on the sidelines of a UN General Assembly meeting in New York, eases a months-long dispute over the strategically important Arctic island. Unlike Trump’s earlier demand that Greenland be taken under US control, the agreement preserves the island’s status as a semi-autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.
US to expand military infrastructure
The agreement allows the US to establish a “Golden Dome” missile defense system in Greenland. It also paves the way for the construction of new military facilities in Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, in addition to the existing Pituffik Space Base.
Trump said the US would begin establishing a broader military presence on the island. He described Greenland as an area of importance to US security.
The agreement amends the 1951 defense treaty that provides the legal basis for the US military presence in Greenland. The document also limits the ability of US rivals to establish military bases and make certain sensitive investments on the island.
Agreement follows diplomatic crisis
Trump’s refusal to rule out using military or economic force to acquire Greenland triggered a diplomatic crisis within NATO and led to months of negotiations between Denmark and Greenland.
The new agreement marks a shift away from the US’s previous demands toward a broader security role on the island. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the document underscored the importance of NATO and respected Greenland’s right to self-determination.
Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stressed the importance of maintaining a strong NATO presence in the Arctic. Danish and Greenlandic officials said the agreement respected Greenland’s sovereignty and right to self-determination.
Greenland’s strategic importance
Greenland lies between the Arctic and North America and occupies a strategic position along routes between Europe and North America. The island is also reported to have significant mineral and energy resources.
The US has maintained a military presence in Greenland since World War II. The Pituffik Space Base, located in the northwest of the country, is currently operated by the US.
The agreement is considered the first major planned expansion of US military infrastructure in Greenland since the Cold War.
