US President Donald Trump said Friday that the United States had reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland on the security of Greenland. The deal would significantly expand the US military presence on the Arctic island and grant Washington a permanent role in security matters.
Trump called the agreement “Infinite Life” and said it would not expire. In a post on the “Truth Social” platform, he wrote that no rival country could establish a base, build a military presence or make sensitive investments in Greenland without the written consent of the United States.
The US president claimed that Washington would immediately begin establishing a broader military presence in Greenland and that the arrangement would come at no cost to the United States.
Denmark says sovereignty will be preserved
Denmark confirmed that the agreement is expected to be signed next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Approval by the Danish and Greenlandic parliaments will be required for the deal to take effect.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement would strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic while respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland, as well as the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination.
Thus, despite Trump’s earlier calls for Greenland to become part of the United States, the agreement does not envisage transferring the island’s sovereignty to Washington.
US military presence to expand
According to Reuters, the talks addressed provisions that would enable Greenland to play a role in Trump’s planned “Golden Dome” missile defense system, as well as measures aimed at limiting China’s influence and investments on the island.
The United States currently operates from Pituffik Space Base in northwest Greenland under longstanding defense agreements with Denmark. Trump has repeatedly said that broader US control over Greenland is necessary for national security because of its strategic position in the Arctic and the growing competition between Russia and China in the region.
Earlier this year, Trump’s refusal to rule out the possible use of military force to acquire Greenland led to a serious dispute with Denmark and Greenland. Both sides stressed that the island was not for sale.
The agreement announced Friday gives Washington a significantly expanded security role without transferring ownership of Greenland to the United States. Trump called the deal “a dream come true for the United States” and described it as “historic and special.”
