Three oil tankers that crossed the Strait of Hormuz via an unauthorized southern route in the past 24 hours exploded and caught fire.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports, citing foreign media.
The crews reportedly abandoned the vessels near the strait’s southern coast.
The ships had switched off all radar and navigation systems, the reports said.
The tankers ignored warnings from the IRGC Navy command and attempted to leave the Strait of Hormuz via the unauthorized southern route. During the passage, they struck sea mines and exploded.
The IRGC Navy command said the unauthorized route through the Strait of Hormuz was dangerous. It said responsibility for using the route rested with the vessels’ owners and crews.
The statement also said any “provocative action” that violates the strait’s rules and is supported by US military personnel would be met with a decisive response.
Earlier, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said a vessel had caught fire off the coast of Oman.
No further details about the incident have been released.
