Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott conceded defeat to Democrat Gina Hinojosa in the state’s governor’s race late Tuesday, handing Democrats the office for the first time since 1995, Anadolu Agency reported.

In a speech, Abbott said he had called Hinojosa to congratulate her after reviewing results from every county in Texas.

“There are still votes to be counted, but mathematically, we’re not going to be able to win this election,” he said.

Abbott said he had offered to assist Hinojosa and her team during the transition.

“The thing that I’m most proud about is that you all helped me to be your governor for 12 years,” he said.

Abbott took office on Jan. 20, 2015. His defeat marks a major shift in a state where Republicans have controlled the top government office for decades.

In a post on his “Truth Social” platform, US President Donald Trump argued that Abbott would not have lost had he not become a “RINO”, or Republican in name only, during the last six months of his political life.

Trump added that Abbott “went back to his original formula, and it wasn’t pretty.”

Democrats also won the governorships in Iowa and Ohio, with Rob Sand and Amy Acton defeating their Republican opponents, respectively, according to US media reports.
