Slovenia’s opposition Social Democrats have announced plans to launch an impeachment initiative against Foreign Minister Anže Logar over the rapid development of diplomatic relations with Israel and a sharp shift in the country’s foreign policy.

The Freedom Movement, led by former Prime Minister Robert Golob, and the Left party have also reportedly pledged full support for the initiative.
Under Anže Logar’s leadership of the Foreign Ministry, Prime Minister Janez Janša’s coalition government has set a new course, moving away from the previous liberal cabinet’s strong stance toward Israel. The Slovenian government vetoed a joint document prepared by the European Union against Israel’s illegal E1 settlement project in East Jerusalem.
Following these steps, the Israeli leadership opened its first permanent embassy in Ljubljana. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who traveled to Slovenia to attend the embassy’s opening ceremony, held official meetings. The visit was accompanied by a protest in the capital attended by thousands of demonstrators.
Robert Golob, leader of the Freedom Movement, criticized the government for placing the interests of the Israeli leadership above national sovereignty. During Golob’s tenure, Slovenia downgraded relations with Israel to their lowest level in response to military operations in Gaza and formally recognized the State of Palestine. The current government, however, has lifted the previous restrictions and continues pursuing a policy of normalizing dialogue with Tel Aviv.
