Russia and Ukraine traded accusations on Tuesday over overnight strikes that killed at least three people and injured at least 20, according to statements from officials in both countries.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said a Russian missile strike on Monday evening destroyed part of a four-storey residential building in the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv, killing three people and injuring 15. The service said the Shevchenkivskyi district was also targeted and that four people had been rescued, while others could still be trapped under the rubble.
Rescue workers, police, medics, volunteers, search dogs and municipal crews were operating at the site despite the risk of further strikes, the service said.
In Kyiv, one person was injured when a strike hit a residential building in the Darnytskyi district, the city’s military administration said. In the western Khmelnytskyi region, four people were injured in drone attacks over the past day, Governor Serhii Tiurin said. He added that an attack damaged windows and the entrance area of a regional medical facility.
Ukraine’s Air Force said its air defenses shot down 88 of 108 Russian drones launched overnight. It also reported that Russia fired five Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles from the Bryansk region, but did not say how many were intercepted.
Russia reports hundreds of drones intercepted
Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces carried out coordinated strikes on a workshop and locomotive depot in Kyiv, as well as a logistics centre, warehouse and dry cargo ship in the southern Mykolaiv region. The ministry said the sites were involved in delivering military cargo to Ukraine.
The ministry also claimed that Russian air defenses downed 604 Ukrainian drones across 15 regions and over the Sea of Azov.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said 417 drones were heading towards the region around the Russian capital between 8:30 p.m. on Monday and 7 a.m. on Tuesday, with 65 destroyed as they approached the city.
Kaluga Governor Vladislav Shapsha said 73 drones were downed in his region overnight, damaging a school building, two private homes and a car in the Mosalsky district. The governors of the Tula and Voronezh regions also reported drones being shot down, with no consequences reported.
Stavropol Governor Vladimir Vladimirov said an attack damaged property in the industrial zone of Nevinnomyssk. He said there were no reported casualties or ground damage in Solnechnodolsk, while inspections and repair work were under way.
Independent verification of claims by Russian and Ukrainian authorities is difficult amid the war, which has been ongoing for more than four years. Both sides have intensified strikes in recent months, targeting logistics centres, ports and energy infrastructure. Each denies deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure and says its attacks are aimed at military targets or facilities linked to military activity.
