Russian strikes on southeastern Kyiv overnight killed two people, local officials said Wednesday.
The attacks came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned in a video posted on social media late Tuesday that Russia could launch a “massive strike.” The Kyiv Independent, citing local sources, reported that several explosions were heard in Kyiv at around 3:15 a.m. local time.
Two Kyiv districts hit
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the strikes hit the Darnytskyi district in the city’s southeast and the Podilskyi district in the northwest. A fire broke out at an office and warehouse building, which was destroyed.
Two people were injured in Russian attacks on Kharkiv, a city in northeastern Ukraine, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said.
Two civilian vessels attacked in the Black Sea
Two civilian vessels were attacked Tuesday in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea. One ship sank and the other was seriously damaged, officials said.
Zelenskyy said a joint investigation by the Ukrainian and Bulgarian navies had determined that Russia was behind the attack. However, Reuters reported that Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said it was unclear whether the drones had come from Russia or Ukraine.
A maritime security source said an initial assessment suggested the attack was most likely carried out by Russia. Moscow has not commented on the incident.
The Russian strikes followed a Ukrainian attack on Moscow and the surrounding region on Tuesday. Two people were killed in that attack, and a major fuel facility caught fire.
