Discussion over who will take set pieces at Real Madrid has reportedly been settled, with head coach José Mourinho said to have opted for Arda Güler.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports, citing Defensa Central, that the Portuguese coach has changed the team’s assignment of responsibilities to make better use of set pieces.
According to the report, Arda Güler has been placed first on Real Madrid’s list of players to take free kicks and corners.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Bernardo Silva and Brahim Díaz have been named as the next options after the Turkey international.
Mbappé to take penalties only
Debate over set pieces intensified during Real Madrid’s latest match.
The Madrid side lost 2-1 to Atlético Madrid in the derby. After Arda Güler was substituted in the 54th minute, Kylian Mbappé took the corners and free kicks.
The French forward’s inability to make an impact from those situations drew criticism.
According to reports in the Spanish media, under the new arrangement Mbappé will take only penalties.
Real Madrid’s only goal came from a set piece
Notably, Real Madrid’s only goal against Atlético Madrid also came after a set piece.
Bernardo Silva came on in the 82nd minute. After he took a set piece, Real Madrid’s players scored to make it 2-1.
Despite the result, discussion continued over the team’s failure to make effective use of set pieces.
Arda Güler strengthens his position in the starting lineup
According to Defensa Central, Arda Güler has strengthened his place in the starting lineup with his performances in recent matches.
The Turkey international is expected to feature more often in Real Madrid’s starting lineup after the break for national team fixtures.
Güler has played 349 minutes in seven matches for the Spanish club this season.
He has scored one goal and provided three assists in those appearances, contributing directly to four goals.
The report that Mourinho has made Güler his first choice for set pieces has further fuelled expectations that the Turkey international’s role at Real Madrid will grow.
