Russian forces launched strikes overnight into Tuesday against Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, and the Odesa region on the Black Sea coast. The attacks damaged infrastructure and civilian facilities.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said two information centers in Kyiv had been hit. Moscow also said it targeted a vessel in the Black Sea that was allegedly carrying military cargo, as well as another vessel carrying similar cargo at the port of Odesa. Ukraine did not immediately confirm Russia’s account of the targets.
People wounded in Odesa region
According to Odesa Regional Governor Oleh Kiper, Russian strikes damaged port infrastructure and other facilities. A civilian enterprise also sustained serious damage, and six people were wounded.
A Reuters witness reported hearing explosions in Kyiv on Tuesday morning.
Deaths and injuries reported in Kyiv
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the building of the National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv had been directly hit and that rescuers were working at the scene. He said one person had been killed and six wounded, including three children.
Zelenskyy said a medical facility in central Kyiv had also been hit and that efforts to extinguish a fire were continuing. He said a pharmaceutical company and gas stations in the capital, a business center in Dnipro, and civilian facilities, enterprises and communications infrastructure in other parts of the country had also been targeted.
Russia has repeatedly said it strikes military and military-related infrastructure in Ukraine. Kyiv, however, says Russian attacks frequently damage civilian facilities and infrastructure.
Zelenskyy: 10,000 more North Korean troops could be sent
Zelenskyy also said more than 8,000 North Korean troops were currently in Russia and preparations were underway to send another 10,000. He said additional personnel were being selected for training before being deployed to Russia.
The Ukrainian president said Moscow planned to increase the recruitment of foreign nationals into the Russian army and urged governments to take measures to prevent their citizens from joining Russian forces.
Zelenskyy alleged that Russia was providing North Korea with technological assistance in exchange for military support. He said production of Shahed-type attack drones had been established in North Korea with technical support from Russia.
Military ties between Russia and North Korea have deepened in recent years. However, Moscow and Pyongyang have not publicly confirmed all the details of the military personnel and technology cooperation described by Ukraine.
