According to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a U.S.-owned MQ-1 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was shot down in the Strait of Hormuz, off the coast of the city of Sirik.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the UAV was detected and neutralized by Iran’s air defense systems.
U.S. military officials have not commented on the incident.
The MQ-1 UAVs, produced in the United States in the 1990s, were initially designed for reconnaissance, surveillance and long-range imaging. Modern camera systems and missile weapons were later integrated into the aircraft, adapting them for combat missions.
