Borussia Dortmund could be without midfielder Konstantinos Karetsas for its away match against Sabah in the main phase of the UEFA Champions League. The 18-year-old has injured his ankle and may be unable to play for several weeks.
According to Ruhr Nachrichten, the player returned to Dortmund on crutches after the away match against Union Berlin on October 17. Karetsas came on in the 62nd minute of the 0-0 draw and, five minutes later, twisted his ankle after his foot caught in the turf during a challenge with Rani Khedira. He was replaced by 17-year-old Mathis Albert in the 79th minute.
Severity of injury being assessed
FussballTransfers reported that Karetsas may not return to action until at least the international break in mid-November. No official medical assessment has been released. Borussia’s managing director for sport, Lars Ricken, said further examinations were needed, while sporting director Ole Book voiced concern about the player’s condition.
The Greece international joined from Genk in the summer. In September, he felt unwell because of a circulatory problem during a Champions League match against Villarreal and was carried off on a stretcher; he returned to training after undergoing examinations.
Borussia have failed to win their last three competitive matches and have not scored in their most recent games against Bodo/Glimt and Union Berlin. The Sabah-Borussia match will kick off at 20:45 Baku time on October 20 at Baku Olympic Stadium. Karetsas is unlikely to feature, with his condition to be clarified after further examinations.
