Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has assessed his side’s 2-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid in the second round of the Champions League league phase. The match was played in Madrid on October 13.
Barrios scored for Atletico Madrid in the first minute, and Lukun added a second in the 79th. Manchester United player Yoro was sent off in the 74th minute.
Speaking to the BBC, Carrick said the team had started confidently but that, given previous matches and various factors, it was easy to lose control quickly. He said the players’ response showed that there was confidence, team spirit and unity within the squad. Carrick said the players had to find their own way out of the situation and had done so well.
“We lost and are disappointed with the result, but there are different ways to get through difficulties like this. Overall, we handled it with dignity. It strengthened our belief in ourselves and made us stronger,” Carrick said.
The coach said tests of this kind could bring the squad closer together and that this had happened at the club during the current week. He added that the players were in a very good frame of mind. Manchester United are 13th in the standings with three points after two rounds.
