Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has criticized defender Lisandro Martinez for speaking publicly about the situation at the club. The Argentine made the comments after Manchester United lost 2-0 to Atletico Madrid in the second round of the UEFA Champions League.
Rooney said he believed the interview had been planned to take place after the defeat. He stressed that players should show unity during difficult periods rather than discuss events publicly.
The former striker also described Martinez’s remarks about the level of his teammates as disrespectful. Rooney said only captain Bruno Fernandes might have the authority to make such comments, but added that it would be better to discuss such matters privately.
Rooney said he did not believe the interview would improve the situation at the club. Instead, he said, it would fuel debate around the team and create the impression of discontent among the players. Manchester Evening News reported his comments, citing his appearance on Amazon Prime.
