A journalist and a passerby rescued a man from a car submerged in floodwater in the Australian state of Queensland. They pulled the driver to safety shortly before the vehicle disappeared completely beneath the water.
Journalist Will Murray, with Australian public broadcaster ABC, was reporting on flooding north of Brisbane on Thursday when a man tried to drive a four-wheel-drive vehicle through floodwaters, AnewZ reported. The vehicle’s engine stalled and the car began to sink, according to ABC.
Seeing that the driver was in danger, Murray and another man swam to the vehicle and rescued him.
ABC camera operator Liz Pickering, who witnessed the rescue, said their intervention had prevented a tragedy: “They undoubtedly saved that man’s life. There is no doubt about it.”
Morayfield received about 170 millimeters of rain at the time of the incident. Heavy rainfall caused flooding in areas north of Brisbane and made local roads dangerous.
