Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei has sharply responded to statements by US officials blaming Tehran for rising global oil and fuel prices.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the Iranian diplomat made the statement on his official “X” social media account.
Baghaei said Washington was seeking to shift responsibility for the crisis away from itself. “US officials blame Iran for rising fuel prices. They apparently assume that people have forgotten who started the military aggression and how these actions triggered the crisis that led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and disruption of commercial shipping,” he said.
Baghaei criticized the United States for shifting responsibility for the military intervention onto the other side and portraying it as a “defensive measure.” He said such rhetoric was not new and had been used historically. The spokesman referred to Nazi Germany’s attempt to justify its 1939 attack on Poland as a “defensive measure,” using the analogy to criticize Washington’s arguments.
The Strait of Hormuz is a major maritime route linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider global energy market. Any disruption to shipping through the strait can affect international oil supplies and prices.
