Police in New Delhi have launched an investigation into the alleged availability of child sexual abuse material on platforms operated by “Meta”, a child rights official said, according to Anadolu Agency.
“Acting on our directions, Delhi Police has registered an FIR regarding the availability of Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material (CSEAM) on platforms operated by Meta India,” Priyank Kanoongo, a member of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, said.
“Meta” has not commented on the development.
The investigation follows increased scrutiny of the company’s handling of harmful online content. A BBC Eye investigation published in July found paid advertisements promoting child sexual abuse material on “Instagram” in India.
Following those findings, the Indian government ordered the company to remove advertisements and other content promoting such material from its platforms.
In September, “Meta” said it would begin reporting child safety cases directly to Indian authorities and reaffirmed its commitment to combating online child exploitation and related crimes.
