Türkiye is preparing to sue Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, over content deemed inappropriate for children’s ages, Education Minister Yusuf Tekin said in Ankara on October 22, AnewZ reported.

Asked by a journalist about families who had filed lawsuits against Meta, Tekin replied: “Yes, we are preparing to do the same. We are considering taking the matter to court.”

Tekin said children are exposed on social media to content that is “pedagogically inappropriate for their age,” negatively affecting their education and personal development.

According to the minister, Türkiye’s Ministry of Trade and Ministry of Industry are examining possible legal measures. Tekin said Meta should either make age-inappropriate content inaccessible to children or change it.

A nationwide ban on mobile phones in schools in Türkiye took effect in September 2025. Students are required to hand in their phones, while teachers are expected not to bring phones into classrooms.

In April, the European Commission found that Meta had breached European Union laws by failing to prevent children under 13 from using Facebook and Instagram. Meta said it disagreed with the findings of the two-year investigation and that relevant measures had been taken.
