Yemen’s Houthis said they had attacked “sensitive” sites in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, using missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.
Saudi Arabia said on Saturday that its air defense systems had intercepted a missile launched toward the capital. Footage published by Reuters showed flames and a large plume of black smoke near Riyadh airport. The exact source of the incident was not disclosed.
The Houthis also claimed to have attacked an Aramco facility in Yanbu, one of Saudi Arabia’s major oil export hubs. Saudi officials said attacks targeting the cities of Bish, Farasan, Taif and Yanbu had also been thwarted.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, secretary-general of the Gulf Cooperation Council, condemned the attacks on Saudi Arabia. They stressed that targeting civilian facilities posed a serious threat to regional peace and security.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran would not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until its conditions were met. He added that the United States must also fulfill its commitments.
Mohsen Rezaei, an Iranian official responsible for security affairs, called on the United States to accept Tehran’s “rights and conditions” to begin negotiations. He said Iran had presented Washington with seven conditions for starting talks.
US President Donald Trump cut short his weekend trip to Camp David amid rising tensions in the Middle East. The White House said he was expected to return late on Saturday. It did not disclose why the trip had been shortened.
