“Curfews will continue to be imposed in certain districts of major French cities, depending on the situation surrounding protests in the country.”
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez made the remarks.
The minister said no significant change in the situation was expected in the coming days and that curfews would remain in force.
He said decisions would be made based on the risk of public-order disturbances in each region.
Mass protests involving trade unions and student movements took place in various French cities on October 24.
After riots on October 17, France’s Interior Ministry announced that the number of police officers and gendarmes deployed to maintain public order would be increased from 10,000 to 70,000. Street protests were banned and curfews imposed in several cities.
According to France’s Interior Ministry, 410,000 people took part in the October 24 protests. The General Confederation of Labour (CGT), meanwhile, put the turnout at 800,000.
