A flash flood emergency was declared Monday for parts of Brevard County in central Florida, including West Melbourne and Palm Bay, after heavy rain caused dangerous flooding, Anadolu Agency reported, citing the National Weather Service (NWS).
The NWS office in Melbourne said 15 to 20 inches (38.1 to 50.8 centimeters) of rain had fallen in the affected area by 11.35 am local time (1635 GMT). An additional 2 to 4 inches (5.08 to 10.16 centimeters) was possible.
Residents in the affected areas were urged to move immediately to higher ground amid warnings of life-threatening flash flooding. The alert covered southeastern Brevard County on Florida’s east-central coast. The county includes Melbourne and Palm Bay.
Brevard County authorities reported widespread flooding on roads, particularly in the southern part of the county. They urged residents to stay home if possible and avoid driving through flooded roads.
Brevard Public Schools canceled classes Monday because of the heavy rain and flooding, according to the Florida Department of Education.
Flood watches and flash flood warnings were also issued for parts of central and southern Florida. Authorities urged residents to monitor local weather updates and follow emergency instructions.
NWS offices in Melbourne, Miami and Key West advised residents to remain alert to changing weather conditions and follow guidance from local authorities.
The NWS advises people not to walk or drive through floodwaters, warning that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
