India’s southern state of Andhra Pradesh is preparing for Cyclone Murasu, which is likely to make landfall around midnight Monday, Anadolu Agency reported.
The India Meteorological Department said in an update on Monday that the severe cyclonic storm is expected to move northwest and cross the coast between Nellore and Narsapur, near the Ongole region, between midnight Monday and the early hours of Tuesday.
Winds are forecast to reach 100 to 110 kilometres per hour (62-68 mph).
The cyclone comes days after five people were killed when Cyclone Arnab made landfall along India’s southern coast.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to prepare. He said estimates indicate that the cyclone could damage 6,000 to 8,000 electricity poles, posing a “severe threat to power supply.”
Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan wrote on the US social media platform “X” that the cyclone is expected to have a severe impact on Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla and Krishna districts.
Authorities have ordered people in low-lying areas to evacuate to safe locations.
