US President Donald Trump said the United States and Canada are close to reaching a new trade agreement.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that foreign media published the information.
Speaking to journalists at an airport while travelling to an election rally in Iowa, Trump discussed his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney: “We have a very good concept for a deal with Canada. We have been losing money because of Canada for a long time, for 70-75 years. We are now very close to a deal.”
Trump said a possible agreement would also bring positive results for Canada.
The US president said that, if the deal takes effect, American farmers would be exempt from tariffs, while the government in Ottawa would build the strategic Keystone XL oil pipeline.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also said in a statement yesterday that he had held a productive meeting with Trump on the future of bilateral trade.
The pipeline project was previously cancelled by the administrations of Barack Obama and Joe Biden on environmental grounds. On May 1, Trump formally approved implementation of the project, which is intended to transport oil and petroleum products across the border between the two countries.
