Finland has decided to join France’s nuclear deterrence initiative.
"Operative Information Center-OMM" reports that Finland’s Presidential Administration and Ministry of Defense issued a joint statement on Sept. 14.
The statement said Finland had decided to join the nuclear deterrence principle.
It noted that the decision is in line with the international obligations of both countries and represents an important step toward strengthening European security and bilateral cooperation.
“This will make it possible to control escalation without reaching the nuclear threshold,” the statement said.
A steering group is expected to be established in the coming months to begin implementing the cooperation.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb said on social media that the initiative is primarily aimed at strengthening European security.
“The initiative increases Europe’s responsibility for its own defense and helps prevent escalation. Finland does not intend to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory in peacetime,” Stubb said.
Eight countries initially joined the initiative proposed by France: Belgium, the United Kingdom, Germany, Greece, Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden.
France’s nuclear deterrence initiative is part of broader European discussions on defense responsibility and strategic security. Finland, which joined NATO in 2023, has traditionally maintained a policy against hosting nuclear weapons during peacetime.
