Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reaffirmed Türkiye’s support for Azerbaijan’s efforts to establish lasting peace in the South Caucasus, saying the liberation of Garabagh had opened a new era in the region. Anadolu Agency reported the remarks.
Speaking at a joint news conference with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Shusha on Sunday, Erdogan said Türkiye supported Azerbaijan’s efforts for lasting peace just as it had supported what he called the country’s “just struggle.” The event marked the sixth anniversary of the liberation of Garabagh.
Erdogan said Azerbaijan’s liberation of its territories from occupation during the 44-day Second Garabagh War in 2020 had ushered in a new era in the South Caucasus. He also praised Azerbaijan’s ongoing reconstruction efforts in the territories.
“We greatly appreciate Azerbaijan’s efforts to rebuild Garabagh and restore the region to its former vitality,” he said.
Erdogan said relations between Türkiye and Azerbaijan had reached their current advanced level after passing through various tests of history. He said the bond between the two nations, rooted in their shared history and the principle of “one nation, two states,” would continue to guide their common future.
He also highlighted the Shusha Declaration, signed on June 15, 2021, which elevated bilateral relations to the level of an alliance. Erdogan said those seeking to weaken the countries’ brotherhood would not achieve their goals, as they had failed in the past.
Aliyev thanked Türkiye for its support during the 44-day Second Garabagh War, saying Azerbaijan would never forget the solidarity shown by Erdogan and the Turkish people.
“Throughout the 44 days of the Second Garabagh War, you and the brotherly Turkish people stood by our side. This will never be forgotten,” Aliyev said.
He described unity between Azerbaijan and Türkiye as “eternal and unshakable,” adding that attempts to undermine their close relations would fail.
“Our unity and brotherhood with Türkiye are unshakable. Those who seek to drive a wedge between us will never succeed,” Aliyev said.
