Al-Nassr forward Cristiano Ronaldo has offered his condolences following the death of Tenerife player Jesus de Miguel.
“It is a tragedy. There are no words… I wish his family great strength. May he rest in peace,” Ronaldo wrote on his social media account.
The incident occurred during a Spanish Segunda Division match between Tenerife and Andorra in the 12th round. In the seventh minute of stoppage time in the second half, visiting goalkeeper Jesus Owono brought down the Tenerife forward forcefully near the centre of the pitch and was shown a straight red card. De Miguel remained on the pitch after the collision and lost consciousness shortly afterwards.
According to doctors, the player’s heart and breathing stopped, and he remained in that state for about 20 minutes. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered while he was being taken to hospital. Despite doctors’ efforts, the 30-year-old died. Tenerife officially announced the death of its player on November 3.
