China will lead the creation of an open-source platform to promote cooperation among BRICS countries on large language models, Chinese President Xi Jinping said in a speech at the BRICS summit in New Delhi, India.

Xi called on BRICS countries to accelerate efforts to establish a global artificial intelligence governance framework and deepen trade ties. According to state broadcaster CCTV, which released details of Xi’s speech, the initiative will also include “specialized AI research and training” programs for BRICS countries.

The measures are aimed at building an “open ecosystem for artificial intelligence.” Xi also proposed establishing a special economic zone for BRICS companies and announced that China would host the BRICS Services Trade Forum next year to expand trade and investment ties.

He said BRICS should build a strong foundation for practical cooperation. At the summit’s closing session, Xi urged the “Greater BRICS” countries to strengthen cooperation, maintain the stability of industrial and supply chains, and create an integrated market.

The name BRICS is derived from the initial letters of the English names of its founding members: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The bloc, which positions itself as an alternative to Western-led institutions such as the G7, currently also includes Iran, Indonesia, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates as full members. The group has about 10 partner countries as well.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said solutions developed within BRICS should not be limited to member countries, but should be adapted and made accessible to meet the needs of the Global South. Russian President Vladimir Putin described BRICS as a powerful force contributing to the creation of a fairer and more multipolar world order.

The summit took place as fighting between Iran and the United States, as well as between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi forces, intensified again in the Middle East. On Saturday, summit participants adopted a joint statement also supported by Iran and the UAE. The statement expressed serious concern over the continuing escalation of tensions in the Middle East and called on all sides to exercise maximum restraint.

On the sidelines of the summit, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. It was the highest-level meeting between officials of the two countries since the conflict began.
