The General Assembly of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) has approved the Presidium’s decision to expel Ramiz Mehdiyev from the academy.
The Presidium adopted the decision several days ago, Operative Information Center-OMM reports.
A criminal case was opened against Mehdiyev last year under Articles 193-1.3.2 (legalisation of property obtained through criminal means), 274 (high treason) and 278.1 (actions aimed at seizing power by force or forcibly changing the constitutional order of the state) of the Criminal Code. The Baku Court of Grave Crimes sentenced him to 14 years in prison. Given Mehdiyev’s age and health conditions, the court ruled under Article 70 of the Criminal Code that the prison sentence would be suspended.
