President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev attended the opening of the 100 MW Gobustan Solar Power Plant in the Pirsaat settlement of Baku’s Garadagh district on September 16.
The Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov, Chinese Ambassador to Azerbaijan Lu Mei, and Yi Nan, chief executive officer of Universal International Holdings Limited, welcomed the head of state.
President Ilham Aliyev was briefed on the Gobustan Solar Power Plant, Universal Energy and the company’s activities in Azerbaijan.
Officials said the company, established in Shanghai, provides solutions in the fields of green energy and energy storage systems.
In addition to China, Universal Energy is implementing renewable energy projects in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
Under a decision adopted by the Cabinet of Ministers in 2023, a 300.77-hectare plot of land in the Pirsaat settlement of Baku’s Garadagh district was designated as an area for renewable energy sources for the construction of a solar power plant.
The site was put up for auction for the construction of the solar power plant, and China’s Universal International Holdings Limited won the auction in 2024.
The Gobustan Solar Power Plant project is the first renewable energy project implemented through an auction in Azerbaijan and the first project carried out by Universal Energy in the country.
In addition to solar panels, field inverters and transformers have been installed at the plant, while cabling work has been completed.
Following the commissioning of the Gobustan Solar Power Plant, it is expected to generate approximately 200 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This will save 45 million cubic meters of natural gas per year and reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere by 97,000 tons.
