Azerbaijan has joined the Mecca Convention on cooperation among law enforcement agencies of member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in combating corruption.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General Kamran Aliyev made the announcement.
“The Mecca Convention on cooperation among law enforcement agencies of OIC member states was adopted in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in 2022. Azerbaijan also actively participated in drafting and adopting the document,” he said.
The prosecutor general recalled that Azerbaijan had also taken part in the previous two meetings, while the third meeting was held in Baku on Oct. 27-28.
“At this meeting, Azerbaijan joined the convention along with other states. The document has already been signed, and we hope it will be ratified soon, after which the convention’s provisions will be implemented in Azerbaijani legislation,” Kamran Aliyev said.
He said Azerbaijan’s joining the convention at this stage was particularly important in view of the country’s future chairmanship of this format within the OIC.
“As you know, Azerbaijan will chair this format within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in the coming years. I hope that during this period our country will continue effective cooperation with OIC states in all areas, including the fight against corruption,” Kamran Aliyev said.
The prosecutor general also noted that combating corruption remained one of the priority areas of Azerbaijan’s state policy.
“President Ilham Aliyev has demonstrated political will in the fight against corruption. As you know, Azerbaijan has joined the relevant UN conventions, as well as other regional and international agreements in this field. The Mecca Convention is a new platform for cooperation in this area. I believe our work in this direction will also be successful,” he said.
