The results of PISA 2025, the Programme for International Student Assessment, have been announced.
"Operative Information Center-OMM" reports that Education Minister Emin Amrullayev provided the information at a news conference today.
PISA provides broader and more comprehensive information about Azerbaijan’s general education system. One of the main reasons the assessment is significant for Azerbaijan is that it covers all regions of the country.
While only Baku participated in the 2018 and 2022 PISA assessment cycles, the 2025 assessment was conducted nationwide. This made it possible to build a broader database on students’ knowledge and skills across Azerbaijan.
The minister said that 91 countries and economies and 760,000 students participated in the latest PISA assessment, representing 33 million 15-year-olds worldwide. Azerbaijan was represented by 241 schools and 7,432 students.
“Baku is ahead of the mathematics results of many developed countries. Baku ranks 29th in this ranking. We are also among the 50 best-performing economies nationwide, with Azerbaijan ranking 49th. Overall, Azerbaijan has a mathematics tradition, and it is very strong. We still have room to advance,” the minister added.
Regarding the PISA results in science, Amrullayev said Baku ranked 47th, while Azerbaijan ranked 69th. According to him, the results in this area are also satisfactory, but the country needs to make further progress.
PISA is an international assessment conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development that measures the ability of 15-year-old students to apply knowledge in reading, mathematics and science. Its nationwide coverage gives Azerbaijan an opportunity to compare educational outcomes across regions, as well as with other participating education systems.
