In August, air temperatures in Baku remained above the climatic norm for 27 days, according to data provided to the Operative Information Center-OMM by the National Hydrometeorological Service.
The report indicates that throughout August 2026, temperatures in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula were 0–5 degrees above the climatic norm for 27 days, while remaining 0–3 degrees below the norm for only 4 days. The average monthly temperature was 28 degrees Celsius, which is 2 degrees higher than the long-term climatic average.
The maximum temperature recorded in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula reached 39 degrees Celsius on August 9 (Mashtaga). In the regions, the peak temperature was recorded at 40 degrees Celsius on August 9 and 10 (Kurdamir). Conversely, the minimum temperature in the capital area was 19 degrees Celsius on August 31 (Sumgait), while high-mountainous areas, such as Shahdag, recorded a low of 6 degrees Celsius on August 30.
Meteorological data also highlighted significant precipitation patterns. Some days in August featured intermittent rain, lightning, and hail, with some areas experiencing intense downpours. The highest precipitation levels were recorded in the Guba-Gusar zone (Shahdag - 250 mm, reaching 381% of the monthly norm) and in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula (Baku - 19 mm, Chilov Island - 26 mm, reaching 305-617% of the monthly norm).
Furthermore, hail was observed in the center of the Kalbajar district and the Alagollar area of the Istisu settlement, as well as in suburban areas of Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, accompanied by heavy downpours. Wind conditions also necessitated 10 yellow and orange weather warnings throughout the month. Windy weather was observed for 12 days in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, and 28 days in the regions, with maximum wind speeds reaching 23 m/s and 24 m/s, respectively.
These weather fluctuations are part of broader climate variability trends currently being monitored by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. Such anomalies underscore the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in Azerbaijan, prompting authorities to maintain heightened vigilance and issue timely warnings to the public.
