Protesters carrying Iranian flags and posters supporting the hijab gathered outside Azerbaijan’s embassy in London. The demonstration took place amid a dispute over school dress rules in Azerbaijan, AnewZ reported. The issue has prompted protests and criticism from human rights organizations.
A small group gathered outside the embassy, holding posters reading “Hands off my hijab” and flags associated with the UK-based Islamic Human Rights Commission.
Some protesters also carried Iranian flags bearing portraits of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. They chanted slogans supporting the right to wear religious head coverings. One of the slogans was “Let our sisters study today.”
The dispute in Azerbaijan began after the Cabinet of Ministers approved changes to school uniform rules on September 21. The rules prohibit clothing considered inconsistent with the “principle of secular education.”
Although the changes do not mention the hijab or specifically target it, reports said schools had turned away girls wearing hijabs after the rules took effect on October 12.
