A massive explosion at a firework factory in southern India has resulted in significant loss of life.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the powerful blast occurred at a facility in Tamil Nadu state. At least 25 people have been confirmed dead, with approximately 40 workers believed to have been inside the premises at the time of the incident.

The force of the explosion was so intense that several production buildings within the factory complex were completely leveled. Emergency services have transported the injured to nearby hospitals, where several remain in critical condition. Search and rescue operations are currently ongoing at the site, and an official investigation has been launched. Preliminary findings suggest that a violation of safety protocols may have triggered the disaster.

Industrial accidents at firework units are a recurring issue in India, particularly in the state of Tamil Nadu, which serves as the country's primary hub for firework and matchstick production. These facilities often see a surge in activity ahead of major festivals. Despite government regulations, many small-scale units operate with inadequate safety measures, leading to frequent fatal incidents during the chemical mixing and handling processes.
