The Baku White City project is one of the world’s prominent examples of modern urban planning. Launched on Dec. 24, 2011, with President Ilham Aliyev and First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva in attendance, the project is designed to be environmentally clean and sustainable, following Smart City principles and incorporating the latest advances in urban planning. The area, formerly known as Black City, had been polluted by oil industry waste for more than 150 years. At the initiative of the President of Azerbaijan, a rare environmental project was implemented there to create a modern residential district. The residential buildings were the first in CIS countries to be designed in accordance with BREEAM, an international environmental certification standard, and CRREM, the Carbon Risk Real Estate Monitor requirements. With broad internal streets, green spaces and modern international sculpture, Baku White City has become one of the capital’s most modern places to work, live and relax.

As part of the Baku White City project, a concept for a new museum building has been developed in cooperation with the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR). The museum will focus on the rich history of Azerbaijan’s oil industry and its leading role in the global energy sector. It will tell the story of the transformation of Black City, once facing environmental disaster, into the modern, sustainable Baku White City. The building will include an exhibition hall, library, offices, restaurants and cafes. The project also includes a 90-meter observation tower offering views of the city and the waterfront.

Gilavar, one of the main landmarks of Baku White City, brings together public spaces, entertainment venues, dining establishments, yacht clubs and a 49-story residential building approximately 185 meters tall.

The project was developed jointly by ADEC and the renowned U.S. firm SOM, a world leader in high-rise architecture and the designer of the Burj Khalifa.

Baku White City has also become a popular destination for art and culture enthusiasts. Renowned sculptors from around the world have expressed interest in installing their works there. These include the Qarabag Horses sculpture complex by American sculptor Robert Summers; Seven Public Clocks, a composition of seven clocks created specifically for Baku White City by renowned artist Konstantin Krik and installed in Time Square; the bronze sculpture Above the Clouds by renowned sculptor Joseph Klibansky; and In Search of Light by contemporary British sculptor Simon Gudgeon.
