Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that a new weapon designed to intercept drones is undergoing testing.
According to Zelensky, the new system recorded a successful strike overnight.
The Ukrainian leader also said that Russian drones had entered Moldova’s airspace. He made the remarks in an interview with the US television network CBS.
Zelensky said he was at Chisinau International Airport in Moldova at the time, adding that the incidents occurred while he was traveling abroad and returning from the trip.
“My presidential plane was there in Moldova, and that is why they attacked Moldova and Moldovan airspace. Maybe they did not want to attack me personally,” Zelensky said.
He added that the same thing happened again as they passed through Chisinau while returning to Ukraine.
In a separate development, the US Department of Justice charged five people allegedly linked to Russian intelligence services. According to the indictment, the individuals operated to carry out attacks and killings in various locations around the world, including the United States.
US Attorney General Todd Blanche said the plans included an attempted killing of a Russian dissident believed to be in the Washington area. The defendants are currently at large, according to the report.
Ukraine has been developing and testing various systems to counter drone attacks, which have become a major feature of the war. Such systems are intended to detect, track and neutralize unmanned aerial vehicles.
