More than 137,000 children in Yemen have reportedly been deprived of education amid escalating military tensions.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the information was included in a statement issued by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
UNICEF said children must not lose their futures because of conflicts. As part of its response, the organization is working to establish temporary classrooms and child-friendly centers for affected schoolchildren. Meanwhile, thousands of families have been forced to leave their homes because of intensified fighting along Yemen’s western coast and in Taiz governorate. In cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund and the World Food Programme, emergency assistance and essential supplies have been delivered to more than 14,000 people recently displaced.
It was reported that clashes in Yemen began to intensify again in July, and the situation on the western coast changed after the Houthis seized several areas controlled by government forces. The Houthis have reportedly strengthened their positions in Hudaydah, the Mokha district of Taiz, strategic locations along the Red Sea coast and islands around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Yemen has faced prolonged conflict, which has severely affected civilians and disrupted access to essential services, including education and healthcare. UNICEF and other UN agencies continue to provide assistance to children and families displaced by the violence.
