Chinese President Xi Jinping and Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi emphasized the importance of working together to build an "equal and orderly multipolar world" during an official meeting held in Beijing.

Operative Information Center-OMM, citing foreign media, reports that the meeting on February 3 marks the South American leader's first official visit to China following political tensions in Venezuela in January.

Yamandu Orsi stated that the primary goal of his visit is to enhance Uruguay's international prestige, attract new investments to the country, and create development opportunities.

In a post on the Facebook social network, he noted that he is leading a large delegation of 150 people during the visit, which covers the cities of Beijing and Shanghai.

As a result of the meeting, the parties signed a joint declaration on deepening their strategic partnership and 12 cooperation documents covering various sectors.

China is currently the largest market for Uruguayan exports. In the first half of 2025, Uruguay achieved a positive trade balance of $187.1 million with China. Uruguay primarily exports agricultural products, including meat, soybeans, and wood pulp to China, while importing machinery, electronics, and chemical industry products in return.

Experts suggest that Orsi's visit to Beijing demonstrates that South American countries remain interested in close cooperation with China despite global geopolitical polarization. This diplomatic engagement aligns with China's broader strategy to strengthen ties with Latin American nations through the Belt and Road Initiative and other bilateral frameworks, aiming to foster economic integration and mutual development across the Global South.
