The price of a catalytic converter is not the same for all vehicles. In addition to the make and model, the engine type, the component’s design and the amount of precious metals inside it also affect its market value.

What precious metals are inside a catalytic converter?

According to auto mechanic Jalil Ahmadov, one of the main reasons catalytic converters are expensive is that they contain precious metals.

“A catalytic converter has always been a valuable component because it contains very expensive materials. There is platinum, palladium and then rhodium. Because it contains such valuable materials, the catalytic converter is considered a very expensive component.”

According to the mechanic, catalytic converter prices vary from one vehicle to another. While some models are worth several hundred manats, the price of more expensive converters can reach 1,500–2,000 manats or even higher.

“There are models worth 200–300 manats in Azerbaijani currency. There are also models worth 1,500–2,000 manats. In other words, the price of a catalytic converter varies depending on the vehicle it belongs to. That is why some drivers remove and sell them.”

The amount and composition of precious metals inside a catalytic converter are not the same in all vehicles. As a result, one vehicle’s converter may sell for several hundred manats, while another may be worth considerably more.

The mechanic said removing the converter can also cause several problems for the vehicle. According to him, fuel consumption may increase in such cases.

“The absence of a catalytic converter is also very harmful to the vehicle. Since it does not clean the gases being emitted, our police officers, including traffic police, may fine the driver. Fuel consumption also increases considerably. The difference can be up to one or two liters.”

Removing the catalytic converter may trigger an engine fault

Removing a catalytic converter can also cause electronic systems in some vehicles to issue warnings. In such cases, a fault light, including the “Check Engine” warning, may be activated on the engine management system.

This happens because oxygen sensors operating together with the catalytic converter detect changes in the exhaust-gas readings. If the vehicle’s electronic control system no longer receives the expected readings, it may register a fault.

As a result, the income gained from selling the catalytic converter may later be offset by costs related to restoring the vehicle’s technical condition, repairing electronic-system problems and dealing with increased fuel consumption.

Simply put, a catalytic converter is one of the main components involved in making exhaust gases released by a vehicle less harmful.

When a vehicle is running, the combustion of fuel in the engine produces various gases. Through chemical reactions, the catalytic converter helps transform some harmful components in those gases into less harmful substances.
