The summer that ended in Western Europe was the hottest in the history of meteorological observations.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media outlets, that the region experienced unprecedented heat this summer.
According to the reports, the monthly temperature record set in July 2023 was matched in August.
The average near-surface air temperature in August 2026 was 16.96 degrees Celsius, 0.85 degrees higher than the 1991-2020 average. As a result, the August that ended was the hottest August in the history of meteorological observations. Together with July 2023, it also shares the status of the hottest month ever recorded.
The global average temperature for the June-August period matched the record set in 2024. This summer also surpassed the previous record, recorded in 2003.
Ocean surface temperatures also approached record levels. In August, the average sea surface temperature equaled the record recorded in March 2024.
Scientists use long-term temperature averages and ocean-surface measurements to assess climate trends and identify exceptional heat events. The figures cited in the report underline the continuing rise in global temperatures and the growing pressure on marine ecosystems.
