Viking head coach Morten Jensen did not meet with reporters ahead of the UEFA Champions League league-phase matchday four game against Sabah.
According to Sportsbibelen, Jensen’s absence from the press conference drew attention after a controversy during a Norwegian league match against Bodo/Glimt. Jensen and opposing head coach Kjetil Knutsen had an emotional exchange during the game, and both coaches were sent off.
Viking’s other head coach, Bjarte Lunde Aarsheim, attended the press conference in Jensen’s place. The club said the two coaches take turns leading the team and switch responsibilities each week.
Asked why Jensen had not appeared before the media, Aarsheim replied: “No, it’s my week now.”
Viking chief executive Erik Nevland rejected speculation that Jensen had been kept away from reporters because of the earlier controversy. “I think Morten should focus on what happens on Wednesday. That is the most important thing right now,” he said. Nevland also stressed that the club does not restrict its coaches’ communication with the media.
The Viking-Sabah match will kick off at midnight Baku time on the night of November 4-5.
