Despite early predictions that the conflict with Iran would end soon, Washington is sharply increasing its military presence in the Middle East. US President Donald Trump has said tensions could rise further after the elections and that new strikes against Iran have not been ruled out.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the United States is sending additional naval forces to the Middle East.
With the arrival of the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the USS Makin Island amphibious group, the number of naval personnel in the region will exceed 20,000, while the number of military aircraft will reach into the hundreds. Three US aircraft carriers are expected to be deployed in the region simultaneously by the end of October.
In an interview with Time magazine, the US president said military operations against Iran could be expanded after the midterm elections scheduled for Nov. 3. Trump said he had rejected Tehran’s latest ceasefire proposal, including its conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, because he did not consider them acceptable.
Asked about the war’s potential impact on the midterm elections, the US leader said Iran would not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons and expressed confidence that American voters would support this firm position.
